Located in the historical and picturesque city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang University is a prestigious institution of higher education with a long history. Qiushi Academy, the predecessor of Zhejiang University, was founded in 1897 and was one of the earliest modern academies of higher learning established in China. In 1928, the academy was named National Zhejiang University. The remaining departments were divided and developed to become 4 specialized higher education institutions, namely former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University. In 1998, the four universities sharing the same ancestor merged to form the new Zhejiang University and set a new goal – to develop into a world-class university. Zhejiang University is a comprehensive research university with distinctive features and a national as well as international impact. Research at Zhejiang University spans 12 academic disciplines, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, art, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management etc. With 7 faculties and 36 colleges/schools/department, 1 polytechnic Institute, Zhejiang University has 14 primary and 21 secondary national leading academic disciplines.

In addition, there are about 6,237 international students currently attending Zhejiang University. Among its approximate 3,502 standing faculty members, 1,631 faculty members have title of professor. Other important facts and figures are as follows: 19 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 19 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 88 experts in State “1000-elite Programs”, 41 chief scientists of national 973 projects, 128 Chair Professors in Cheung Kong Scholar Program, and 130 scholars awarded with National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. With seven campuses, namely Zijingang, Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan and Haining campus, Zhejiang University encompasses an area of 4,265,678 square meters with school buildings covering 2,575,983 square meters of floor space. The university library holds a collection of more than 6.935 million volumes. In addition, Zhejiang University has 7 high-level affiliated hospitals.

The Global University Network for Innovation-Asia and the Pacific ( GUNI-AP) was founded in September 2002 in Hangzhou, China. It is a network of networks constituted by UNESCO Chairs, institutions of research into higher education and institutions that carry out innovation projects in higher education. Its mission is to contribute to the reinforcement of higher education in Asia and pacific region, by application of the decisions of the World Conference on Higher Education, notably the implementation of the UNESCO/UNU Forum on higher education, as in the Framework for Priority Action for the change and development in higher education.

GUNI-AP was initiated by UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, Bangkok, United Nations University, Chinese National Commission for UNESCO and Zhejiang University in partnership with other 8 leading universities from 7 countries in the region. The secretariat of GUNI-AP is located in Zhejiang University, China.

Formed in 1997, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) is a consortium of 37 leading research universities in the Pacific Rim. APRU aims to foster education, research and enterprise thereby contributing to the economic, scientific and cultural advancement in the Pacific Rim.
APRU aims to promote scientific, educational and cultural collaboration among Pacific Rim economies. In both its objectives and guiding principles, APRU embodies a commitment to global academic and research standards.
APRU recognizes that its activities can be powerful catalysts for expanding educational, economic, and technological cooperation among the Pacific Rim economies. In this regard, the association seeks to promote dialogue and collaboration between academic institutions in Pacific Rim economies so that they can become effective players in the global knowledge economy.
Steering Committee
The steering committee provides leadership for the association. Members of the steering committee are elected and comprise presidents of member universities in the Americas, Asia and Australasia. The APRU chair also heads the steering committee.

Zhejiang University is one of the founding members of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), which was found in 2000. Zhejiang University’s aim is to foster and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between members, in research and education on a global scale, through bringing together the experience, equipment and expertise to tackle the global issues currently facing societies, governments, corporations and education. Zhejiang University is a comprehensive national university. Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University was initially known as “Qiushi Shuyuan” (Qiushi Academy), one of the earliest modern academies of higher learning established in China. 1928: Renamed as National Chekiang University.In 1952, because of the nationwide restructuring of universities, Zhejiang University underwent a reshuffling of disciplines and some departments merged into other universities.

In September 1998, a new Zhejiang University was established on the basis of the amalgamation of the four former individual universities, namely Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University, which were all located in the garden city of Hangzhou. Approved by the State Council, the founding of the new Zhejiang University has been a significant move in the reform and development of China’s higher education. The four universities have grown out of the same ancestry, the Qiushi(with the literal meaning of “seeking truth” in Chinese) The Zhejiang University, now has 112 specialties for undergraduate studies, and masters degrees in 317 programs and doctoral degrees in 283 programs. Under Zhejiang University’s administration there are 14 Nation Key Laboratories, 2 National Engineering Research Centers and 3 National Engineering Technology Centers. Besides, Zhejiang University has set up 35 nation key specialties and 43 post-doctor stations.

Zhejiang University was founded in 1897 as one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China.
