Nanjing Medical University is a university located in the city of Nanjing in the Jiangsu Province of China. It was first established in 1934 in Zhenjiang city, but it was relocated to Nanjing in 1957. The university has 2 main campuses, the Wutai and the Jiangning campuses. In 1962, it began offering six-year programs and was approved to award doctoral and master's degrees in 1981. Nanjing Medical University (NMU) was founded in Zhenjiang in 1934 when it was called National Jiangsu Medical College. It was moved to Nanjing in 1957 and renamed Nanjing Medical College. In 1962, it joined the first group of medical universities to offer six-year programs, and was approved to confer doctoral and master’s degrees in 1981. In 1993, it was renamed Nanjing Medical University with the approval of the State Educational Committee. Nanjing Medical University is one of the top medical universities in Jiangsu Province. The university comprises two campuses, Wutai campus and Jiangning campus. Located next to the downtown Wutai Shan Sports Center and covered an area of 80,000m2, Wutai campus is the educational center for Nanjing Medical University’s scientific research activities and postgraduate education. Located in the Jiangning District Campus City and covered an area of 980,000m2, Jiangning campus is the educational center for Nanjing Medical University’s undergraduate programs, starting from September 2003. It consists of 15 secondary schools and 1 independent school. They are School of Basic Medical Sciences, the First School of Clinical Medicine, the Second School of Clinical Medicine, the Third School of Clinical Medicine, the fourth school of Clinical medicine, School of Gulou Clinical Medicine, School of Stomatology, School of Public Health, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Medical Policy and Management, School of International Education, Kangda School, School of Continuing Education and School of Higher Vocational and Technical Education. It has 18 affiliated hospitals and over 30 teaching hospitals in Nanjing, Changzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou and Huaian. Nanjing Medical University has a strong faculty team of over 1,400 registered faculty members, including more than 150 full professors, 400 associate professors. Among them are 15 National-Level Experts with Special Allowance sponsored by the State Council, one winner of ‘National May 1st Labor Medal’, 3 national excellent teachers, 4 national excellent backbone teachers, 1 expert with Extraordinary Contribution from Ministry of Health. Nanjing Medical University takes an active part in extensive exchange and cooperation by virtue of great opportunity of the Internationalization of higher education. The University has established bilateral relationship on academic exchange, and cooperation on scientific research and talents cultivation, between medical schools and scientific research institutions in USA, Japan, France and Australia. In 2007, there are about 200 foreign students studying in Nanjing Medical University.
