Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences originated from Boji Medical School which was established in 1866 and was the earliest institution of learning and practice of western medicine of China .
Sun Yat-sen University or Zhongshan University , established in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen , a great revolutionary of 20 th century, is a multi-disciplinary, key comprehensive university of Chinese Central Government . It is under direct administration of Ministry of Education, China . It is among the first ranked universities in China and has been accepted into "211 Project" by the central government.
During the 2001 re-organization of universities by the government of China , the former ' Sun Yat-sen University ' and ' Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences' were merged together to form the present Sun Yat-sen University . After merger, the former Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences is known as Sun Yat-sen College Of Medical Sciences. Dr. Sun Yat-sen himself studied medicine in this college.
Sun Yat-sen College of Medical Sciences is a comprehensive medical school with multi-specialties, multi-curriculum and multi-programs. There are 40 research centers, institutions and laboratories. There are two mobile post-doctorate research stations, 77 academic departments, 30 specialties which are accredited to confer master's degrees and 8 undergraduate programs of studies.
Library has a collection of more than 500,000 volumes of books and over 5,000 different titles of periodicals in Chinese and foreign languages. Staff strength is 7000 among them about 1100 are high ranking teachers, doctors and other professionals.
Currently, there are over 4,000 students studying medicine. Since 1954, this medical college has admitted about 300 foreign students from 56 countries of 5 continents. In 1987, the University began to enroll foreign students for various post-graduate and doctoral programs
University has established academic exchange with more than 10 well-known universities, academic institutes and societies in countries and areas of America , Canada , Japan , Australia , England , France and Germany , and has signed exchange agreements with 40 of them.

Duration of Course:
The duration of the course for MBBS study is 5 years. This is the formal course duration all over China recognized by WHO and China Medical Council. Session begins in September .
