There are nursing schools and colleges in almost all states of India which offer courses on nursing. Nurses training include theory and practical sessions. The introductory courses familiarize students with the basics of nursing whereas the masters' degrees help them in specializing in the field of their choice. After completing a course, nurses must register with the organization for registration of nurses present in every state.

Candidates who wish to apply for nursing courses should pass their S.S.L.C or equivalent examination, preferably with Chemistry, Physics and Biology as main subjects. The major courses includes:

General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) -- 3 ½ years

M.S.C Nursing -- 2years.

In this for B.Sc and General nursing the eligibility is 10+2 with Biology, Physics and Chemistry; For Auxiliary Nurse only 10th standard pass; For M.Sc the eligibility is B.Sc nursing.
